15 - White fondant, optional for Pisces symbols or stars
16 - Silver star sprinkles, optional

# How to make it:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
02 - In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
03 - In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, approximately 3 to 4 minutes.
04 - Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract until fully combined.
05 - Alternately add flour mixture and milk to butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
06 - Divide batter evenly among prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
07 - Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack to cool completely.
08 - Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla; beat until smooth and fluffy.
09 - Divide buttercream into four bowls. Tint each with different galaxy colors: navy blue, purple, teal, and black.
10 - Place alternating spoonfuls of each colored buttercream onto cake layers and sides. Use offset spatula to swirl gently for galaxy effect.
11 - Sprinkle edible glitter generously over the cake. Add fondant Pisces symbols or stars if desired.
12 - Chill for 30 minutes before slicing to set the design.

# Expert advice:

01 -
  • The vanilla sponge stays impossibly moist for days, so you can bake ahead without stress.
  • Swirling buttercream is forgiving enough for beginners but looks absolutely stunning on the table.
  • Every slice reveals those gorgeous galaxy colors, making it feel more like edible art than just dessert.
  • The edible glitter catches light and movement, turning any moment into a small celebration.
02 -
  • Room temperature ingredients are non-negotiable for proper emulsification; if your eggs or butter are cold, the whole batter suffers.
  • Overmixing after adding the flour develops gluten and creates a dense, tough cake, so stop mixing the moment you see no dry flour streaks.
  • Edible glitter looks exponential better when applied to freshly frosted cake; if you wait until it's fully set, the glitter won't catch and cling the same way.
  • If you're applying fondant Pisces symbols, do it before chilling so they adhere to the soft frosting rather than sliding off a firm surface.
03 -
  • Invest in quality gel food coloring; it gives you deeper, more vibrant galaxy colors without thinning out your buttercream the way liquid dyes do.
  • Use an offset spatula and let your wrist move loosely rather than trying to control every swirl; the most beautiful cakes often come from confident, relaxed movements.
  • Keep your cake pans on the same oven rack during baking so all three layers rise evenly and stack perfectly flat.
